EPA Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Grant Selections Interactive Map
Brownfields are “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) website, it is estimated that there are approximately 450,000 brownfields sites in the United States. Each year, the EPA awards grants to local governmental and quasi-governmental agencies for the assessment and cleanup of brownfields sites. Altamont Environmental, Inc. (Altamont) has created an interactive map that shows where two types of recent grants have been awarded in the southeast.
The data depicted on this map was taken from the EPA’s Brownfields webpage http://epa.gov/brownfields/pilot_grants.htm. This data represents cities (points), counties (polygons), and regions/coalitions (polygons) located in EPA Region 4 (Southeast) that have been awarded a Brownfield Community-wide Assessment or Revolving Loan Fund Grant during the fiscal years of 2009, 2010, or 2011. EPA Region 4 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and 6 Tribes. Please click on the points or polygons for more detailed information regarding the grant recipient(s), type of grant awarded, amount of grant awarded, and the year in which the grant was awarded. Generally, once a grant is awarded, the recipient has three years in which to conduct their proposed grant activities. For example, recipients of 2009 grants may still have funding available through the first half of year 2012.
The information provided on this map can be used in a number of ways:
- You may use the information to see if any grants have been awarded in areas where you own property or would like to buy property
- You can contact the grant recipient to find out the status of current projects and plans for future projects
- You can contact the grant recipient to see if they have money available for your project.
Please be aware that this interactive map is provided for general informational purposes only. It is not meant to provide real-time information regarding funds that will be available with each grant recipient. Please contact the individual grant recipients for up-to-date information.
