This summer we are pleased to have two co-op employees—one from the University of Georgia and one from the University of Tennessee—spending the current term working at Altamont in Asheville, North Carolina.
Conner Smith is a student at the University of Georgia in Athens in the College of Engineering, and he has joined Altamont for his third student co-op semester with us. Conner studies Environmental Engineering and is also pursuing a minor in Spanish Language. He participates in UGA’s chapters of the Society of Environmental Engineers and Engineers Without Borders. As an undergraduate research assistant, he has worked with UGA’s COBIA (Coastal Oceanography and Biophysical Integrated Analysis) lab. Conner is coauthor of a paper that was recently published by Oxford University Press in the Journal of Plankton Research: “Examining mesozooplankton patch structure and its implications for trophic interactions in the northern Gulf of Mexico.” Check out the abstract. Conner was born and raised in Athens.
Altamont also welcomes Christian Patterson, a student in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Christian has an academic emphasis in Biosystems Engineering. He is a former Cadet and Battalion Commander in the Army JROTC Leadership Program. He has served as a Goodwill Youth Advantage Program Mentor; completed a Sustainable Agriculture Internship; and constructed a prototype water diversion system in coursework at UTK. Christian hails from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and he intends to spend three consecutive terms—essentially a full year—at Altamont to complete his co-op certification at UTK.
Welcome to Asheville, Christian, and welcome back, Conner! We’re enjoying having you both here this summer.
