Ground is Broken for Landfill Beneficial Reuse Project

Altamont has been working with WNC Communities and International Paper Company (IP) since 2008 to design and construct the Western North Carolina Regional Livestock Center (WNCRLC) on a closed IP industrial waste landfill.  Ground was broken for the construction phase of the project, in a ceremony held February 11, 2010.  Altamont’s Anna Saylor attended the ceremony.

WNCRLC is one of the first facilities in the state to be permitted and constructed partially on permitted landfill waste.  The facility will service communities throughout Western North Carolina, filling an important need, as the closest facility is currently over 100 miles away.  The facility will be used both for the sale of livestock and for various community events.

The facility will include two metal buildings (51,000 square feet in total) constructed just outside the landfill’s waste boundary.  Parking and loading areas will be constructed over capped waste material.

Altamont has provided leadership and expertise to address permitting and design elements, such as:

  • Obtaining all necessary permits consistent with appropriate regulations
  • Protecting the existing landfill cap and underlying waste
  • Preventing landfill gas intrustion into new and existing structures and utilities
  • Developing a long-term landfill gas monitoring program for structures and associated emergency response plans should landfill gas be detected
