Altamont Staff Presents "Beneficial Reuse of Landfill" Project to Two Audiences
During the last week of April, Altamont’s Joel Lenk, PG and Paul Dow, PE made two presentations that highlighted the work necessary to implement beneficial reuse of property occupied by a closed industrial landfill. The presentations were given to the North Carolina Section of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). Mr. Lenk and Mr. Dow explained how Altamont worked cooperatively with the landowner and other project stakeholders to construct a regional livestock auction facility on a closed International Paper Company industrial solid waste landfill (previously used for disposal of paper mill wastewater treatment waste). The facility, which will service farmers and producers throughout Western North Carolina for the sale of livestock and other agricultural-based community events, will fill an important need. The presentation demonstrated that with proper planning and preparation, closed landfill properties can be beneficially reused. Both presentations were well received by all in attendance. The North Carolina SWANA conference was held in Asheville, April 27-29 and the TDEC Solid/Hazardous Waste Conference and Exhibition was held in Gatlinburg, April 28-30.
