Marta VanDussen, E.I. Attends Global Methane Initiative Meeting in Poland
Altamont’s Marta VanDussen, E.I. attended the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Meeting in Krakow, Poland last week. GMI is a multilateral partnership, the purpose of which is to “create a voluntary, non-binding framework for international cooperation to reduce anthropogenic methane emissions and advance the recovery to use of methane as a valuable clean energy source”. Ms. VanDussen, who is a native of Lubin, Poland, joined nearly 200 participants from 37 countries and 6 continents in this partnership-wide meeting.
“The meeting was great and very informative.” says VanDussen. “I learned a lot. I gained awareness of how the European Union (EU) has impacted environmental policy in Poland and beyond. I found out about the technologies used to capture landfill gas and the landfill gas utilization applications”
Ms. VanDussen attended technical and policy sessions of the Landfill Subcommittee, including:
- Methane Mitigation in Solid Waste Management
- Solid Waste Management and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs)
- Case Studies from Recent Innovative Landfill and Wastewater Biogas Projects
- The Polish Experience—Challenges and Opportunities for Advancing Landfill Gas Energy
She also attended a visit to the “Barycz” Landfill Site, which is a state-of-the-art facility funded by the EU, and includes a landfill gas capture installation, waste sorting plant, and composting plant.
