Company History

In 1996, Altamont Environmental, Inc. (Altamont) began as an Asheville, North Carolina branch office of The Fletcher Group (formerly headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina).  Under the leadership of branch manager James S. McElduff, The Fletcher Group of North Carolina provided traditional environmental engineering services such as solid waste management and assessment and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater.  In 2001, the branch was purchased by James S. McElduff, Stuart A. Ryman, and John D. Thornton, and renamed Altamont Environmental, Inc.

Through its commitment to excellence, Altamont grew rapidly and expanded its range of services.  Originally located in downtown Asheville at 78½ Patton Avenue, Altamont quickly outgrew its available space and in 2004, the company moved within downtown Asheville to a new location at 50 College Street.  Leaving it in the capable hands of Jim and Stu, in January 2005, John D. Thornton transitioned out of the company.  Altamont continued to grow.

In January 2008, James S. McElduff transitioned out of the company and in January and July 2008 respectively, Altamont saw existing employees, Christopher F. Gilbert and Joel D. Lenk transition in as owners along with Stu.  In May 2009, Altamont’s office expanded yet again and moved to its current location at 231 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville, North Carolina.  Altamont continues to provide excellent service to its clients.
