details

Altamont has assisted Chemcraft International, Inc. (Chemcraft) with assessment and remediation of their Winston-Salem,
North Carolina facility. Altamont samples monitoring wells and prepares summary reports for submission to the North
Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). In addition, Altamont assists in the operation and
maintenance of an interim air sparging and soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) system. The interim AS/SVE system
is effectively reducing groundwater contaminant concentrations. To address soil and groundwater contamination outside the zone of influence of the interim AS/SVE system, Altamont, on behalf of Chemcraft, developed a Corrective Action Plan. The Corrective Action Plan recommended soil excavation and the expansion of the existing AS/SVE system with the potential for in-situ chemical oxidation.
The recommendations in the Corrective Action Plan were approved by DENR. Currently, Altamont is implementing the soil excavation and AS/SVE system expansion. Although soil excavation and AS/SVE system expansion will address a majority of the contamination, AS/SVE alone may not reduce concentrations in groundwater below remediation goals. Therefore, if contamination remains in concentrations above remediation goals, a chemical oxidant, sodium persulfate, will be introduced into the subsurface through the air sparging point network.

challenges
Several contaminants with varying environmental fate and transport properties were identified during the soil and groundwater assessment at the Chemcraft facility. Given the variability of the contaminant properties, identifying the right combination of remedial technologies was critical to completion of a successful Corrective Action Plan.
