BENEFICIAL USE OF LANDFILL GAS - Jackson County | Dillsboro, NC

This innovative project involves the utilization of landfill gas from a closed municipal landfill as an energy source for a Regional Arts and Crafts Center and an Alternative Crops Development Station. Since the discovery of potentially dangerous levels of landfill gas, Altamont has worked with Jackson County to identify remedial alternatives that could provide economic benefits to the community. The project encompasses the design and installation of a landfill gas extraction system, including several large diameter wells, system piping, flare assembly, and retrofitting buildings to utilize the recovered gas. Our services include grant assistance, project design, oversight of extraction system installation, and facilitating involvement of community organizations and regulatory agencies. The total project value is $1.4 million.

Aside from the technical challenges of the project, Altamont has identified and solicited assistance from organizations within the region in support of the project. Altamont has facilitated stakeholder identification and interaction as well as overall development efforts in order to reach the broadest possible audience. The project is both a model to be considered at other closed landfills, as well as a valuable marketing tool in a community where tourism provides a large percentage of overall revenue dollars.
