ENHANCED IN-SITU BIOREMEDIATION - Interstate Brands Corporation

details

Altamont has assisted Interstate Brands Corporation (IBC) with assessment and remediation of ten sites throughout the southeastern United States. At all of these sites we sampled monitoring wells and prepared summary reports to the applicable regulatory agencies. On two sites we utilized enhanced in-situ bioremediation techniques to remediate petroleum impacted soil and groundwater below site specific regulatory limits. Our services included development of Corrective Action Plans for each site. The Corrective Action Plans detailed items such as injection well and trench design, injection frequency, sampling frequency, and sampling requirements. Enhanced in-situ bioremediation involved application of microorganisms, nutrients, and oxygen to the subsurface to successfully reduce high levels of petroleum related compounds to non-detectable concentrations in a matter of months. Groundwater sampling three and six months following enhanced in-situ bioremediation indicated that concentrations remained near or below detectable concentrations. Site closure was obtained at these two sites.

Altamont also provides other consulting services to Interstate Brands Corporation. These include Phase I and II site assessments, hydraulic lift removals, and closure of sites throughout the southeast US.

challenges

Altamont works with the appropriate state regulatory agency to secure the necessary Underground Injection Control permits, as well as negotiating site closure based on groundwater sampling results and the site-specific risk profile. Perhaps more challenging, however, is efficiently and effectively addressing the technical difficulties associated with the application of bioremediation materials into varying geologic formations. Altamont has addressed these challenges and routinely meets the project schedules and budgets.
