Watershed Restoration/Stormwater Management

Location:
Greene County, TN

College Creek and Holley Creek, tributaries of the Nolichucky River, are currently classified as 303(d) impaired streams. Although primarily agricultural, the watersheds include significant commercial, industrial, and residential development.  Altamont assisted the Greene County Soil Conservation District (GCSCD) in obtaining EPA 319 grants to develop comprehensive watershed restoration plans for over 17 miles of stream. The plans include 5‐year programs to restore the streams, improve water quality, and manage stormwater through low-impact, best management practice (BMP) designs, including stormwater wetlands, bioretention facilities, and rainwater harvesting.

Altamont is designing retrofits for several existing detention basins which are not effectively detaining stormwater in order to reduce peak runoff flows into the creeks.  Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling was conducted and the basin designs include perforated outlet risers to control outflow and features that promote biofiltration such as meandering flow paths, shallow pools, and wetland vegetation.

Because of the karst topography conditions in the watershed, a geophysical survey for a biofiltration BMP site was conducted using an electromagnetic survey and ground penetrating radar to locate underground water features in order to develop a design that minimizes impacts to groundwater resources. Altamont is also assisting GCSCD with the necessary permitting and landowner coordination.
