LANDFILL GAS TO ENERGY - University of North Carolina at Asheville

Altamont was selected as part of the design team for the landfill gas-to-energy project being developed by the University of North Carolina at Asheville. This project, currently in the planning stages, will utilize landfill gas from the closed Buncombe County landfill to provide fuel for a Craft Campus. The Art Department at UNCA is taking the lead role for the University. Altamont’s role in the project is to provide technical leadership and design for collection, transmission, treatment, and final use of the landfill gas. The related services will include grant assistance, detailed design, oversight of landfill gas system installation, and facilitating involvement the appropriate regulatory agencies. The total project budget is $5.6 million.

challenges

The project team thus far has conducted a series of charettes conducted to develop the conceptual plan for the new campus. Joint community and university participation has been tapped to ensure a broad base of support and participation in the project. Ultimately, the campus will include studios for ceramics, glass-making, and metal sculpture.
