LANDFILL MAINTENANCE - International Paper | Canton, NC

International Paper (IP) is responsible for five closed industrial waste landfills in Canton, NC associated with a paper mill it sold in 2000. Altamont was selected to be IP’s local representative to manage the company’s interests. The general duties include quarterly inspections of landfill slopes, caps, and stormwater outfalls; property maintenance including mowing caps, slopes, and roadways; and routine groundwater monitoring and data tabulation. Recently, we served as a liaison for the company in the transfer of one of the closed landfills for development as a public recreational facility. The Town of Canton entered into a long-term lease of the landfill property and intends to build numerous baseball and soccer fields. The annual value of services for IP exceeds $70,000.

challenges

The technical challenges relating to the maintenance of the landfills includes groundwater and methane monitoring and maintenance of extremely steep landfill slopes. Additionally, the paper mill was a primary employer in Haywood County for most of the twentieth century. International Paper has a strong sense of responsibility to the employees and families who spent their entire career at the mill. Altamont understands this and maintains positive relationships with city and county officials, as well as neighbors adjacent to the closed landfills.
