Altamont was contracted to design, permit, and manage the construction of streambank repair, surface water quality protection, and landslide stabilization projects related to storm damages in Mitchell and Yancey Counties. These projects were funded through the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program administered by NRCS. The EWP project in these counties was designed to repair damage done by Tropical Storms Francis and Ivan to local watersheds to reduce the water quality impacts associated with the damages. The projects cover the entirety of both Yancey and Mitchell County. Construction budgets totaled in excess of $7,500,000.

Project challenges included: a strict project deadline, over 90 individual project sites including some 95 miles of impacted streams, high quality trout waters and endangered species, extensive design and permitting issues, historical resources, diverse multiple stakeholders, and multiple construction projects using a variety of contractors.
