As detailed in
project summaries and
resume summaries, Altamont has demonstrated success in all
aspects of stream restoration. Altamont consists of a team of highly trained and experienced professionals with expertise in all technical, regulatory
and public relations aspects of ecological restoration projects. Specifically, our strengths include natural channel design, buffer zone restoration
planning and implementation, regulatory permitting procedures and requirements, sediment and erosion control best management practices, restoration
construction management and post-construction monitoring. Our extensive experience provides a particular strength during the construction management phase, as we fully understand the challenges encountered by the contractor as well as the necessity of rigorous construction quality control.

Ecological restoration often involves working with the multiple stakeholders to successfully complete a project. We routinely interact with multiple stakeholders including the public and regulatory agencies as well as the client on high profile projects. Successful teaming with other specialized consultants is often a key to our success. We understand that successful projects are the result of effective communication, precise planning, efficient field activities, and skilled reporting.
Tropical storms in the fall of 2004 severely impacted streams and hill slopes throughout Western North Carolina. Through the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) funded repair of many storm related damages. Altamont staff completed detailed inventory and analyses of post flood conditions for severely eroded streams and landslides throughout Yancey and Mitchell Counties. Detailed assessments were completed on over 80 individual reaches of stream and 15 landslides, including many with endangered species and historical resources. Repairs were designed and all required permits were obtained from federal and state agencies. Altamont managed all bidding and construction management aspects of the project. Over 5,000 feet of the stream channel has been relocated and an additional 25,000 feet of streambank stabilized.
